The Department of Motor Vehicles will be collaborating with the Dealer Community to provide registration services to Connecticut residents who have purchased a vehicle from a private owner. Dealers can process Passenger plates, Combination plates or Commercial plates up to 18,000 GVWR. (The DMV will continue to offer registration services, but is providing customers with an alternate option.)

Registration services offered by the dealers listed below will require two checks. One is for the registration transaction which will be processed through the DMV’s online system, and the second will be forwarded by the Dealer to the Connecticut DMV to pay the sales tax.   (This is necessary as the Dealer did not sell the vehicle and therefore has no ability to collect the sales tax through their automated system.)

Please note that every dealer will have different times, service options and service fees. Contact the dealers/titling services listed below for appointment information. 

DEALERS ARE NOT TO IMPOSE PROCESSING FEES IN EXCESS OF $25. 
Customers should not complete their registration transaction with any dealer charging in excess of $25, and should immediately notify the DMV.

For Connecticut Dealers ONLY:  You have the option to make an appointment with a designated Connecticut HUB Dealer.  A HUB dealer has received approval from DMV and CARA to process transactions for other Connecticut dealers who are not utilizing the online system.  See list of HUB dealerships here.  You will be charged an additional fee of $25 per transaction for this service.

DMV Time-Saving Tip for New Registration - Proof of Ownership 

If a title is required, be sure it has been properly signed over in the name of the person registering the vehicle. This is usually on the back of the certificate of title.
